There is a pathway that turns an immune signal in your body into a low, flat mood in your brain. Your vagus nerve is the wire that carries it. The heavy, unmotivated weeks, the fog and fatigue that feel like your mind failing you, may not begin in your mind at all.

Your immune responses are organized in your lymphatic tissue: the lymph nodes, the spleen, the immune tissue lining your gut. When it activates, that system releases circulating messengers called cytokines.

When your brain receives that signal, it produces a coordinated response: low mood, fatigue, withdrawal, loss of appetite, the pull to rest.

Your vagus nerve is studded with sensors that detect those circulating cytokines and carry the message straight to your brain. This is the afferent vagus, the direction that runs from body to brain. The long exhale raises vagal tone, which shifts you out of the stressed state and softens how strongly that immune signal is felt, and that is the vagus side. Two systems, one sequence.
