Those feed and soften what is inside your colon. They do nothing for whether your colon can physically move. The constipation that fiber only half fixes, and the lower back and hips that stay tight no matter what, may be one problem rather than two.

Your colon is not fixed rigidly in place. It hangs from and glides within fascia, chiefly the mesocolon and the peritoneum lining your abdomen. Normal transit relies partly on that gliding. As you breathe and move, your organs shift against each other, and that motion helps move contents along.

Sit most of the day, brace your core constantly, or carry old abdominal scar tissue, and that fascia stiffens.

The colon loses mobility, and transit slows behind it. Now the microbiome. Transit time is one of the strongest forces shaping which bacteria dominate your gut.

When contents sit longer, the microbial balance shifts, and methane-producing organisms gain ground. Methane is not neutral here. It slows the muscular contractions of your gut further, which slows transit even more. So the loop closes on itself. Slow movement breeds the microbes that slow movement further, and the bloating and fullness build on top of it.

This gets missed because the two ends go to different people. The doctor addresses the stool and the fiber, and nobody assesses whether the colon still has the mechanical freedom to move.

THE EVIDENCE

Human research has established that gut transit time is a major factor shaping microbiome composition, and that a subset of people with constipation carry higher methane linked to slower transit. That your specific fascial restriction is the cause of your slow transit is mechanism-based reasoning, not a proven human outcome.

If your constipation is new, severe, or comes with pain, bleeding, or unexplained weight loss, see a doctor, because those need a real workup.

Here is the move. This morning, lie on your back with knees bent and do a slow spinal twist: let both knees fall gently to one side and hold for sixty seconds while you breathe deep into your belly, then repeat on the other side. Then eat two green kiwifruit, or a bowl of cooled cooked oats.

The twist and the deep belly breathing mobilize the abdominal fascia and coax your colon to glide against the tissue around it, restoring some of the freedom that long sitting took away, and that is the fascia side. The fermentable fiber feeds bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids, which stimulate the muscular contractions of your colon and push the balance away from the sluggish, methane-heavy state, and that is the microbiome side. Two systems, one sequence.

Your constipation may not be a fiber problem you keep failing to solve. It may be a colon that lost the freedom to move, breeding the very microbes that keep it still.
